Paleontologist

Did You Know?

Every bird you see is a living dinosaur. Scientists classify birds as the last surviving branch of the dinosaur family tree, which means the pigeons in a parking lot are more closely related to T. rex than any lizard alive today.

FIRST STEPS

How to Get Started

Getting started on the path to becoming a paleontologist begins with curiosity about the natural world and a willingness to look closely at rocks, bones, and dirt for the clues most people walk right past. Patient observation, careful documentation, and outdoor exploration are all early steps. Every professional paleontologist started as someone who simply could not stop wondering what secrets lay hidden beneath the ground.

Explore the Basics

Go outside with a parent or caregiver and search for interesting rocks in your yard, a park, or a creek bed, examining each one closely for unusual colors, patterns, or shapes. Use a magnifying glass if you have one and talk about what makes each rock different. Noticing small details is one of the first skills real paleontologists practice every day.

Try It Out

Make your own fossil using air-dry clay and small objects like shells, leaves, or plastic bugs, pressing them into the clay to create an imprint and then removing the object once the clay hardens. Compare your fossil imprint to pictures of real fossils and talk about what kind of information a fossil like yours could tell a scientist. This hands-on project mirrors the basic process by which real fossils form.

Join the Community

Ask a parent or caregiver to take you to a natural history museum or dinosaur exhibit near you, and spend extra time in the fossil hall asking a museum staff member or volunteer questions about what you see. Many museums have hands-on discovery rooms designed specifically for young visitors to touch replica fossils and try mini excavations.
