Who He Is
Andrew Ng was born in London to parents who immigrated from Hong Kong and grew up across the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, and Singapore before coming to the United States for his education. He earned his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and joined the faculty at Stanford, where he founded the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Lab. In 2011, he co-founded Google Brain, the team that pioneered the use of large-scale neural networks inside one of the world's largest technology companies, helping transform machine learning from an academic discipline into an industrial engineering practice. He later served as Chief Scientist at Baidu and founded Coursera, the online learning platform that has made machine learning education accessible to millions of people worldwide who would otherwise have had no access to it. Today, he runs AI Fund, an organization that builds and launches AI-powered companies across multiple industries.
Why He Matters
Andrew Ng's influence on machine learning engineering runs in two directions at once. On one side, he helped prove that machine learning could be deployed at massive scale inside real products, turning ideas that worked in university labs into systems that worked for billions of users. On the other side, he democratized access to machine learning education in a way that reshaped who gets to enter the field, with his machine learning course on Coursera taken by more than five million people worldwide, many of whom built careers in machine learning engineering without access to elite universities or expensive programs. His career makes the case that the field grows stronger when more people, from more places and more backgrounds, have the tools to participate in it. In a field that moves as fast as machine learning does, his commitment to making sure the next generation has what it needs to keep up may be his most lasting contribution.
