Swati Mohan

Who She Is

Swati Mohan is an aerospace engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory who led the guidance, navigation, and controls team for the Perseverance rover's landing on Mars in 2021. Mohan moved to the United States from India when she was one year old, and she became fascinated with space at age nine after watching an episode of Star Trek with her family. She went on to study mechanical and aerospace engineering in college and graduate school, then worked on multiple NASA missions, including the Cassini mission to Saturn and the GRAIL mission, which flew twin spacecraft in formation to map the Moon's gravity, before spending eight years helping design and test the system that would land Perseverance safely.

Why She Matters

Swati Mohan became known around the world when she calmly narrated the rover's final descent live as it happened, announcing "Touchdown confirmed" to a cheering mission control. Engineers nicknamed the landing sequence the "seven minutes of terror" because Mars is too far away for real-time human control, so Perseverance's landing system had to make thousands of split-second decisions entirely on its own, and a single error could have ended the mission instantly. For students who love precision under pressure and want proof that a childhood spark of curiosity can lead to landing a real rover on Mars, Mohan's story shows exactly how far that path can go.
