Who He Is
Doug Kammerer is the chief meteorologist of Storm Team4 at NBC4 Washington (WRC-TV), the station he grew up watching as a kid in Herndon, Virginia. He joined NBC4 in August 2010 after forecasting the weather in Orlando, Jacksonville, Macon, and Philadelphia, and has spent more than two decades in broadcast meteorology, covering everything from major snowstorms and hurricanes to severe thunderstorm outbreaks across the Mid-Atlantic. He has reported from the eye of Hurricane Frances and from the top of New Hampshire's Mount Washington, a mountain known for some of the worst weather in the world. Kammerer holds a meteorology degree from the University of Northern Colorado and the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal from the American Meteorological Society, one of the highest professional credentials in broadcast weather, and he has won nine local Emmy Awards. He is known for his calm, clear delivery during severe weather events, helping viewers understand what is happening and what they need to do to stay safe.
Why He Matters
Doug Kammerer shows young people what it looks like to combine science with communication in a career that directly serves a community. His ability to take complex weather data and explain it clearly to viewers across the D.C. region during high-stress moments, from approaching hurricanes to winter storm emergencies, is a powerful example of how meteorology is as much about people as it is about science. Kammerer also visits local elementary schools, in person and by video, to show students how a weather center works and answer their questions, helping kids in the D.C. area understand weather and see meteorology as an exciting career path. For young people who love science and want a career where they can help others every single day, his career shows that broadcast meteorology offers exactly that.
