Did You Know?
A machine learning model trained by researchers learned to detect certain skin cancers from photographs as accurately as board-certified dermatologists, after being shown roughly 130,000 medical images.

How to Get Started
Getting started in machine learning engineering begins with building curiosity about how computers think, experimenting with logic and patterns, and developing comfort with math and data. The activities below are designed to meet you where you are right now, whether you are just discovering what machine learning is or already thinking seriously about a future in tech. Every machine learning engineer started by asking questions about how things work and being stubborn enough to keep asking until they found the answers.
Explore the Basics
Pick one app or device you use every day and spend a few minutes paying attention to what it seems to know about you, like how a music app suggests songs you actually like or how a video platform knows what to recommend next. Talk with a parent or caregiver about where you think those suggestions come from and whether the app has ever gotten it wrong. Noticing the places where machine learning already shows up in daily life is the first step toward understanding how it works.
Try It Out
Create a sorting game at home using a collection of household objects, such as buttons, coins, or dried pasta shapes, and challenge a family member to sort them into two groups without telling them your rule. Then switch, and try to figure out their rule just by watching which objects they put where. This is a hands-on version of what machine learning does: finding the hidden pattern in a set of examples without being told what the rule is.
Join the Community
Look up whether your local library offers free access to a learning platform like Scratch, Code.org, or Khan Academy, and spend an afternoon working through a beginner coding activity with a parent or caregiver. After you finish, talk about one thing the computer could do and one thing it could not figure out on its own. Building an early sense of what computers can and cannot do is the foundation of understanding machine learning.
