Who He Is

Steve Irwin was an Australian wildlife expert, conservationist, and television personality known worldwide as "The Crocodile Hunter." Born in 1962 in Melbourne, Irwin grew up at the Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park, which his parents founded. He began handling crocodiles as a child, and his television series The Crocodile Hunter, which premiered in 1996, brought his infectious energy and deep respect for animals into homes around the world. He died in 2006 after being pierced by a stingray barb while filming, and his family continues his conservation work.

Why He Matters

Steve Irwin brought the excitement of zoology and wildlife conservation to a massive global audience. He had a rare ability to make people care about animals they might otherwise fear. Irwin showed that loving animals is not just about the cute and cuddly ones — it is about understanding and protecting every species. For aspiring zoologists, his career is a reminder that passion, hands-on experience, and the ability to communicate your love for the natural world can make an enormous impact.
